My Social Media Detox Experience

Happy Monday Peeps!

We have all read a blog article or two about social media detox or taking a break from social media and each article has their own take but this is mine.

What inspired this detoxification was an article I read on Facebook, how ironic right?

This article went into detail about the advantages and disadvantages of social media and what it is doing to us as people as a whole and to try our own social media detox.

So My Social Media Detox Experience started in February and lasted about three weeks. It mostly started because of an article I had read but also because each day I went to check my notifications I would feel more and more insecure about myself or start comparing my life to everyone else’s and I knew that wasn’t good for me.

I’ll start with Instagram, it’s so fake and bullshit, mostly anyway. There a select few that are authentic.

Its nothing but models selling fucking tea or who can get the most followers today. Honestly, I could give two fucks about who follows me but I permanently deleted Instagram from my phone and sometimes get updates through email but I don’t think ill ever go back on Instagram because it will always be about people trying to make everyone believe their life is perfect when under the surface its not.

I’m not saying I don’t have flaws, because god knows I do and I try to continually work on them but life is short and hard enough as it is already so why waste time trying to be perfect?

Once I deleted all my social media apps, I immediately felt the weight lift off my shoulders. It felt amazing not to feel obligated to post cool memes or stories, or have the perfect filter on my pictures. I saw myself being happier and having more time to focus on myself and connect with family and friends off of social media.

I did see myself sometimes looking at phone for notifications to pop up but stay focused in the moment instead.

I started realizing the experiences I was missing out on around me and ever since I deleted the apps I began to appreciate my love for nature more.

It’s the little real life things that matter.  Like sitting outside when it’s so quiet so can almost hear it snowing and feeling it hit your face. Taking a walk at night and looking up at the stars and realizing your worries are so small.

This detox was good for me, it made me realize that none of that social media bullshit matters. Its fun once in a while and nice to keep in touch with family and friends especially when you don’t live exactly close. But try this experience for yourself and see how your perception of yourself and the world change.

Happy Friday Everyone!

How is everyone doing?

Ready for the Holidays?

I’m sorta ready for the holidays but its funny how it always seems so far away in the summer time but then fall hits and the holiday season arrives quicker than we realize. Well ready or not, it’s coming!

Let me share my favorites of the week with you!

What to Watch

A rookie officer is teamed with a hardened pro at the California Highway Patrol, though the newbie soon learns his partner is really an undercover Fed investigating a heist that may involve some crooked cops. This movie is a must see if you love comedy!

Gods of Egypt

Mortal hero Bek teams with the god Horus in an alliance against Set, the merciless god of darkness, who has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict. At first I was kind of hesitant to watch this because it could be labeled as a “guy” movie but I don’t think it is. Definitely watch this if you haven’t already.

Happy Friday Peeps!

It’s officially December!

Have you finished Christmas shopping or are you a last-minute shopper? And if you don’t celebrate Christmas, what holiday season traditions do you have?

The weather is getting colder and colder as the days go on, so grab some hot chocolate, tea or even some water and cuddle up while I share my favorites with you!

What I’ve Been Watching

Banshee (Amazon Prime)

An ex-con assumes the identity of a murdered sheriff in the small town of Banshee, Pennsylvania, where he has some unfinished business. If you like action, mystery, witty banter and a little sexy feel, definitely give this show a try. I’ve watched about two seasons so far so don’t quote me on season three and four just yet.

Orphan Black (Amazon Prime)

A streetwise hustler is pulled into a compelling conspiracy after witnessing the suicide of a girl who looks just like her. This show was recommended to me by a fellow blogger and she did not disappoint! The first episode is a little slow in the beginning but I was totally hooked and haven’t stopped watching since I hit play.

What to Listen to on Repeat

I added some new songs to this playlist so give it a listen. Its got some pump up songs, some killer rock, and some sentimental tunes as well. Its got something for everyone.

Culinary School Seafood Bisque

Happy Wednesday!!!!!

This recipe for seafood bisque is creamy and comforting with a little spice.

I made this while in culinary school and recently made my own version of it with just shrimp.

I can share that specific recipe later.

Make sure to let me know in the comments.

I hope you enjoy making this recipe, because I know I did! If you have any questions or concerns about making this, feel free to leave a comment or message me on my social media!

1 gallon of Seafood Veloute (Fish Stock)

1 gallon of Béchamel Sauce

4 ounces of butter

6 ounces of small diced onion

6 ounces of small diced carrot

6 ounces of small dice celery

4 ounces of tomato paste

1 pound of lump crabmeat

1 pound of scallops

1 pound of chopped clams

1 pound of broken piece shrimp

1 tbsp. of old bay seasoning

White pepper to taste

salt to taste if needed

1 cup of sherry cooking wine

Prepare the 2 mother sauces using double boilers and set aside.

( Béchamel and Seafood Veloute)

You don’t necessarily have to use double boilers, because I know not everyone has them. You can make these two in regular pots but make sure to watch the béchamel very carefully because you don’t want to scorch it.

Make sure when you strain the seafood veloute, you don’t do what I did and accidentally use a strainer and no bowl to catch the liquid underneath. haha.

( I had to make the veloute twice.)

  1. Melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Add onions, celery, and carrots sauté until lightly browned.
  3. Add tomato paste and cook for 3 minutes.
  4. Combine the Béchamel, Veloute and mirepoix (veggies) simmer for 30 minutes, continuing to use a double boiler.
  5. In medium sauté pan, sauté scallops and shrimp in 3 ounces of butter and 1 tbsp. of old bay seasoning until shrimp turn red, add to soup.
  6. Add clams and crabmeat to soup. Simmer for 30 minutes.
  7. Add sherry and serve.

Pair this soup with a crusty, warm French baguette!

Hey Everyone!

I wanted to wish all my followers and supporters, a HAPPY THANKSGIVING AND HOLIDAY WEEKEND!

Stay safe, enjoy your family and friends, and have some fun!

I will be taking a brief break until Monday, see you all then!

Its The Freakin Weekend Baby, I’m About To Have Me Some Fun

It’s a good day so I would like to share some of my favorites with all of you! And if you can tell me the song from this blog title in the comments, we should be friends!

What to Binge on This Weekend

Stranger Things Season 2 (NETFLIX)

In my personal opinion I think the second season is equally as good as the first season  probably a little better because you now have more characters to get to know and more in-depth story lines. And if you haven’t watched this show yet, what are you waiting for? Go!

Nerve (Amazon Prime)

A high school senior finds herself immersed in an online game of truth or dare, where her every move starts to become manipulated by an anonymous community of “watchers.” I didn’t think would be that good, but it was actually pretty decent and at times very funny!

BAD MOMS (Showtime App)

When three overworked and under-appreciated moms are pushed beyond their limits, they ditch their conventional responsibilities for a jolt of long overdue freedom, fun, and comedic self-indulgence. I know this has been out for a while now, but I just watched it the other night and its fricking hilarious.

What to Add to Your Playlists

All these songs are my favorites currently and have them on repeat, watch the videos and listen to the music. Theses songs always pump me up and gain confidence, hope they help you too!

What to Curl up and Read

T is for Transformation by Shaun T

I haven’t finished this book yet, but so far so good! I will give a full in-depth review when I am finished!

 What to Buy

Hooded Pullover

You will literally want to live in this hooded pullover, it’s so comfy and warm but lightweight. Great for layering! Added bonus, you can work out in it! I have three and wear them constantly because I just can’t get enough!

Workout Wednesday

My Time at “Fit Camp”

Happy Wednesday Peeps!

It’s story time here on the blog today!

It all starts back in 2007, When I went to “fit camp” aka fat camp.

I was depressed, overweight and would binge eat until I made myself sick then eat some more.

I would sit in my room and hide what I was eating as well as hide from the world, basically I wasn’t living. I couldn’t even look at myself in the mirror without crying or cutting myself.

So, I was watching MTV one night and saw the show true life, yes we all remember that one about a fat camp. So I decided to do some research about those types of camps and came across Camp Kingsmont in Amherst, Massachusetts and read all about it and did some research and looked and watched all the testimonials. I said why the fuck not? I need to do something.

It was one of the best decisions I could have made for myself. At first, I was hesitant to be so far away from the family and going into an experience where everyone and everything was brand new and scary. I figured out when I got there that I wasn’t alone, some of the other campers were scared and nervous just as I was. I cried when my mom left because I wouldn’t see her for basically the whole summer and I had never been away from home that long before.

I went to my first weigh in I was almost 300 pounds. I saw that number and was in utter disbelief. I hadn’t realized I let my weight get to that point. Looking back on that now, I’m about the same weight right now and I’m determined to get that number down and become a stronger, fitter person as I was when I was at fit camp.

As weeks passed, I fell in love with losing weight. Most importantly, being around people who cared about me and my health. People and counselors that where there solely to help others lose weight and become happier and healthier. I was 15 at the time and everyday was a new activity or experience.

We would wake up very early and walk to breakfast and walk back when we were down and start the day with whatever activity our group had for the day. Some days it was the gym( couldn’t even do a sit up) the pool, basketball, or other days we had a fun run! I loved the fun run, you got to go at your own pace ( I was very slow) but I knew that I could get better over time.

I couldnt run a mile without stopping or almost puking, I couldnt do a sit up all the way without being out of breath, I didnt run without my fat flapping up and down or making noises, at one point I couldnt even go on rides and not get embarassed because I didnt fit on rides on our fun days.

On certain days, we met as a group with a nutritionist and she gave us tips and tricks for when we go back home at the end of the summer as well as taught us about healthy eating and why they were serving us specific meals at certain times.

The memories and friends I made there were indescribable but if I had to describe it, it was like the judgement free zone. I came out of my shell bit by bit and talked to more people and got to know their background stories and how they came to Camp Kingsmont.

I was there for about 9 weeks. It was one of the best memories I have in my life long weight loss journey. Everyday was a new start to a healthier me and I wasn’t always happy about waking up early or even the food choices but I grew to love it and at the end of my time there I didn’t want to leave. Oh, and I lost 90 pounds!

I was able to run a little longer, I could do a sit up, I even started to look in the mirror with a smile.

When it’s all said and done, I would do it all over again and cherish the experience a little more.

Remembering my Dad

The day you were taken from us was a very sad day.

I’m going to tell the world about you.

His name was Dominic and he was a Father, Brother, Son, Uncle and Friend.

He passed away when I was 12 years old and I will never forget the night I got that awful news. It was a Wednesday night and I remember because I had a big test the next day at school and my mom came into my room crying and I said what is it? What’s wrong?

She said to me your dad passed away.

There are no words to describe the sheer pain and that I was unable to react at first.

I broke down.

That man was the best part of my life, he always told me that I needed to work hard in life and earn what I receive whether that’s with school, a job or a relationship.

He called me his peanut, his little girl and that I was very special to him. That he would always be there for me and never let anyone or anything hurt me.

You got that right, Daddy’s Girl.

We had such fun memories together, like going to the beach every year for vacation in the summer time, going to Cowtown with him and my grandparents to get Amish soft pretzels that were to die for. He’s the reason I have a love for pretzels, haha. Going on road trips to Florida and Delaware.

We would watch NASCAR, college football games and my best friends wedding together almost every weekend.

The weekends were the best part of the week not only because I got to spend time with him but I would also see my grandparents and my aunts, uncles and cousins, God how much I love them and miss them.

Phillies game were a must with us, I remember one year he put my name on the board and it said Happy Birthday Paige at the Phillies game, that was so special to me!

The funny thing he use to say was I wasn’t allowed to date until I was 30. HAHA, OH DAD.

He was a wonderful son, he lived with my grandparents and helped them continuously.

Not everything is sunshine and rainbows though, and  I am hesitant to even put this in here despite my love for my dad.

I also remember a not so happy thing as well, he use to tell me I needed to lose weight and when there was a weight loss or something fitness related on TV he would say hey, maybe you should do that. Whether or not he was joking, it still hurt to hear that. It’s not a fond memory but it happened. That always stuck in the back of my mind.

But despite that not so happy moment, he was always dedicated to always doing the best and working hard for me.

Everyday I think of him. Some days I wish he was here to point me in the right direction.

And I always think about what he was like when he was little or a teenager, what were his dreams, hopes, fears?

I still deal with the grief, the pain and all those horrible feelings that come along with losing a parent. But, I remember all the happy and fun memories we shared together and it brings a smile to my face.

Each day is different for me, I can handle the loss but sometimes I can’t and I break down and cry because I ask myself, why? Why did God take him from me? But, then I remember we all lose someone we love sooner or later and it’s how we remember that person that matters.

In my experience with losing a parent, is you realize how important they are in your life. They created you and they will always be a part of you and you a part of them. So if I have myself and love myself then I am doing a pretty good job and loving and remembering him as well.

Dad, your peanut misses you so much and loves you more than you will ever know.

It hurts I never got to say goodbye but I know he is always listening and looking down on me.

Grief is love. It’s all the love you have to give but can’t. You slowly learn over time not to get over the loss but to rebuild yourself and learn to live on without them, but forever in you hearts and minds.

No one else understands what you’re going through, which means the people who do understand become so much more important. They are the only people in the world that understand what you have lost, and the weight you now have to carry around with you. Not only that, but you now understand how easy it could be to lose someone because you already lost someone so important to you.

It makes you cherish the people you have more than ever before, and it makes you want to hold onto them stronger. The loss demonstrates how important the people in your life are to you.

This is the number one thing I took away. Never take a single person, experience, memory, or moment for granted.

Everything you currently have can be lost in an instant, without any warning. You learn to appreciate every little good thing in your life, and disregard the bad because it’s nothing compared to what has been. You have learned what is important in life, and what is not. Your meaning of life has changed forever.

Where You Lead, I Will Follow

Yes, the title of this blog is part of the Gilmore Girls Theme song, c’mon if you know me you know I just had to!

Anyway, I wanted to dedicate a blog post just to thanking my followers and supporters, whether you have been here since the beginning or have just started following along. I value every single one of you and will support you all in turn! Because after all, we have to stick together in this world and lift each other up!

WOW! Twenty Five Followers!

I have been blogging since June 2017 and twenty-five might seem like a small number to many bloggers but it means a lot to me that twenty five individuals would read what I have to say!

daffodil blog pic

This blog means a lot to me because it’s an outlet where I can write my thoughts, feelings, opinions and just anything I want! Writing is a source of therapy for me in a way and I genuinely want people to read and give me their thoughts on what I think and have to say! I am doing this for me but if someone or many someone’s enjoy what I write or gives one person the courage to keep going or have a simple smile or laugh, then I know I’m making a difference not only in my own life but in another persons life as well.

Thank You to everyone that follows my blog!
